Even the fastest internet plans from an internet service provider become slow during peak hours. How can you make your internet go faster? Before you ask your internet service provider for a new router, there are some tricks you can try. Here are four tips on boosting your internet speed:

1. Check your router

If your router's not functioning optimally, this can significantly affect your internet speed. Here are ways you can make your router perform at its best:

  • Restart your router. Often, a simple reset is enough to boost speed.
  • Move your router closer to your computer, especially if it's in another room. Routers work best if they're within a certain distance of wireless devices.
  • Clean dirty, dusty router cables. If they're damaged or frayed, replace them. If your router's from your internet service provider, they may provide replacement cables.
  • Use compressed air to clean the inside of the router.

2. Change the channel

If you live in an apartment building, it's possible that your neighbors' traffic can slow your internet speed if they're on the same channel. Changing your wireless channel may be the trick for faster internet. Here are the steps for changing your wireless channel:

  • Open your web browser and enter your router's IP address in the navigation bar. If you don't know the address, it may be printed on the bottom of the router or in your router's manual.
  • Enter your router's name and password. This is typically found in the router manual.
  • A web page will appear. Go to "options" or "advanced" and click "channel number" or "wireless channel".
  • A drop down menu will appear, showing you all the channels. Select one.
  • You may need to keep changing channels until you find the one that is fastest.

3. Clean up your computer

Sometimes, your router isn't to blame for your slow internet speed. Your computer is. The first thing you should do is run a complete virus and malware scan on your computer. When you've done this, remove old, junky files and computer programs you don't use. Finally, remove temporary files. You can do this by going to "start", "programs", "accessories", "administrative tools", and finally, "cleanup". Check all boxes in the menu that appears except game and setup files.

4. Cut down on interference

Wireless devices and appliances can severely alter your internet speed. To cut down on interference of your wireless internet, try some of these tips:

  • Replace cordless phones that run on 2.4 GHz frequencies. Phones running on these frequencies can interfere with your wireless signal.
  • Minimize the amount of wireless devices that are connected to the internet at one time. For example, if you're only using your computer, make sure your phone, tablet, and gaming systems are shut off or not connected to the internet.
  • Make sure that wireless devices like your phone or tablet aren't within a few feet of your router. If they're too close they can interfere with the signal.

If your internet is running slow, try these methods of boosting your internet speed. If these tips don't work, contact your internet service provider and ask for a new router.
